From the age of seven until nine, Contractor was a student at boarding schools in London. Her family then moved to Toronto and she resided there for most of her childhood. Contractor aged 16 at the time she realized that acting would be her career. She had danced for a decade. As soon as she finished high school, she received an all-inclusive scholarship to the University of Toronto. At the University of Toronto she completed a Masters in Theatre and she also double-majored in sociology and psychology. Following a semester at the University, Contractor went to an open call audition for the show Pericles in the highly regarded, world-renowned Stratford Shakespeare Festival [Ontario, Canada and got the lead role. Her performance received rave reviews. her performance in the 92 shows performed this play, which was named"the best show of 2002" by Canadian critics in 2002. She was invited to attend Stratford's conservatory. This is a course which allows just four men and eight females can attend an intensive 20-week training in classical theater. Contractor received a guaranteed spot in the following season of productions and was offered the part of Hermia as Hermia in A Midsummer Night's Dream.
